Access to UKMOD, step-by-step

UKMOD is freely accessible for non-commercial use.

Its use requires access to three separate components: the model (coded policy rules); the input data (baseline microdata); and the software (calculation engine and user interface).

There are two main steps that need to be taken in order to access these components.

Step 1: Secure permission to access the input data

You will need to provide evidence that you currently have a UK Data Service registration and that you are eligible to access the Family Resources Survey (FRS) data, on which the input data are based.

Step 2: Complete the UKMOD online request form

On receipt of a submitted form, we will request evidence of your permission to access the input data. A conditions of access agreement will then be sent to you for signature and return. Once this has been returned, we will supply you with the model, data and software, and instructions on how to install and set up UKMOD.

We are very pleased to announce the release of a new and updated UKMOD model: A2.0+.

Here’s what’s new:

New 2021-2024 policy systems: include simulation of increases to unemployment

New 2021contcovid policy system: simulates the continuation of the Covid-19 increases in income support (Universal Credit, Working Tax Credit and Housing Benefit Earnings Disregard) in 2021, if they continued beyond April 2021

Revisions to 2020 policy system: includes the simulation of the Coronavirus Job Retention Scheme, Self-Employment Income Support Scheme and Covid-19 labour market shocks

Documentation

New UKMOD Country Report documenting tax-benefit simulations in 2018-2024

Software

New software version 3.3.1: Compatible with UKMOD A2.0+ (included with the model)
