MISOC funding comes from a number of sources:
- The Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) – provides core funding on a five year cycle (currently 2009 to 2014). This is subject to a rigorous competitive review process as is project funding for work on specific topics outside the core research programme
- The University of Essex – provides core funding in the form of posts for senior academics who are able to concentrate exclusively on research and research training.
- European Commission – large-scale funding for much of MISOC’s pan-European comparative research. Government Departments and other public sector bodies – research contracts often for policy relevant research projects
- Private sector – research commissions for businesses and privately-funded organisations
