Summary:
Tourism development can influence residents’ quality of life through bottom-up spillover (i.e., mediation) across life domains and through spatial spillover across regions. However, existing research has not integrated these micro and macro perspectives. This study develops an innovative theoretical framework to account for both spillover effects simultaneously. Using a constructed panel dataset from England and Wales, which integrates national longitudinal survey data, tourism statistics, socioeconomic indicators and geographic information, we apply dynamic spatial lag X panel models to verify the above framework. Results indicate that tourism development affects overall life satisfaction only indirectly, through spatial spillover effects mediated by different life domains, depending on the tourism indicators employed, underscoring the complexity of its impacts and the need for multifaceted tourism policymaking.
