Summary:
This series of reports seeks to provide insight into whether very deep poverty is a transient or more enduring experience, and if this differs between different groups of people. In particular, it investigates: 1) Which groups of people are most likely to enter and exit very deep poverty?; 2) What are the events that make entry to or exit from poverty more likely?; 3) Which groups of people are most likely to experience persistent very deep poverty?; 4) What types of support can protect people from the worst consequences of living in very deep poverty?
This paper therefore uses data collected in the main adult survey of Understanding Society to explore the relationship between financial safety nets, social support networks and experiences of very deep poverty.
