Abstract:
Regression-based procedures for the decomposition of the health concentration index by
health determinant have provided the basis for the analysis of the causes of changes in
health inequality over time using data from repeated cross-sectional surveys. This paper
proposes an alternative approach using longitudinal data that is based on the
decomposition of the income-related health mobility index, which provides a direct
measure of the impact of changes in individuals’ health outcomes on health inequality.
The procedures are illustrated by an empirical analysis of the performance of Scotland in
tackling income-related health inequalities relative to England & Wales between 1999
and 2004.
