Abstract:
This paper proposes an agenda for future methodological research on issues pertinent to longitudinal surveys. The agenda is informed by a consideration of the methodological challenges that are unique to longitudinal surveys and a review of research designed to address those challenges. There is a particular focus on recent and current research and discussion of the implications of recent research findings, of technological changes and of other innovations. The objectives are both to stimulate methodological research and to raise awareness of the limitations of current methodological knowledge.
Topics discussed include sample design, between-wave intervals, keeping track of sample members and maintaining co-operation, adjustment for non-response and panel attrition, panel conditioning, and instrument design to minimise measurement error in measures of change.
