Abstract:

Pensioners tend to have lower incomes, and a higher risk of income poverty, than adults of working age. But measures of living standards, especially in the Poverty and Social Exclusion survey (PSE), often suggest that older people are less 'deprived' than might have been expected.

This research analyses the relationships between age, income and deprivation indicators. It includes reanalysis of the PSE to show whether the conclusions are sensitive to the wording and construction of the deprivation indicators used. This is followed by analysis of the British Household Panel Survey to show whether age-differences can be explained by ageing or cohort effects.
