Abstract:
The paper will provide an overview of the advantages, and difficulties, of using survey data to assess the social and economic positions of minority ethnic groups. Issues to be discussed include: defining ethnic groups with 'hard' boundaries for quantitative analysis (see also Ludi Simpson's contribution); using survey questions to measure the cultural components of ethnic identity; comparing and interpreting outcomes such as family structure and employment.
