Abstract:
In this paper, we use data from the British Household Panel Survey to examine the pattern of interaction between parents and their teenage children in Britain. By applying latent class models to the data, we obtain an empirical typology that is consistent with theoretical work on parenting style in developmental psychology (e.g. Baumrind, 1971; Maccoby and Martin, 1983). We then explore the social and demographic correlates of parenting style, focussing on social class and family structure. Finally, we examine the implications of parenting style for children’s outcome.
