Abstract:
This paper presents the findings from a feasibility study designed to investigate the potential to relate changes in family income, employment and material deprivation during childhood to later life outcomes. The study looks at a number of longitudinal datasets that contain intermediate outcomes such as educational qualifications, as well as final outcomes in adulthood such as low income, unemployment and material deprivation.
The paper outlines a plan for future analysis in terms of relevant statistical techniques and the data that are currently available. The paper concludes with suggestions as to the overall feasibility of a more substantive project to look at causal relationships between poverty and children's outcomes.
