Summary:
A number of models - some explicit, some implicit - underpin the study of electoral behaviour in Great Britain, but evaluation of their relative merits has been hindered by the paucity of relevant data, especially longitudinal data. The new availability of such a data set, albeit one that is far from perfect for the task having been designed to service a much wider community than electoral analysts alone, allows some tentative initial steps in the sort of evaluation needed.
