Abstract:
Sir Keith Joseph's political interest in transmitted deprivation in the 1970s led to a substantial programme of research co-ordinated by the the then SSRC I wrote a critical review of that programme when it was completed. Now, three decades later, there is renewed interest in intergenreatuional continuity, and better data. This conference contribution reviews the issues raised by the earlier research programme, and draws lessons for new analysis.
