Abstract:

This paper will present and discuss empirical data suggesting that couples are becoming more individualised in their financial arrangements. Data on spending responsibilities and on access to credit will be used to explore the implications of individualisation. Finally, a wider view of the issue will be developed, using evidence on money management from other parts of the world, and particularly from sub-Saharan Africa.
