Sampling for the European Social Survey
27 Aug 2002
The European Social Survey is an academically-led multi-purpose social survey designed to facilitate cross-national comparative research. The first round of data collection will take place in 2002-03 in 24 countries. Given the focus on comparative research, it is important that the survey methods are standardised across countries, in relevant respects. This paper outlines the process of specifying and controlling the sample design for each country and the design principles adopted. The designs for a couple of countries are used as illustrations of the process and application of the principles. The authors constitute the 'ESS Expert Panel on Sampling.'
