Abstract:

This chapter is part of a report for the European Foundation for the Improvement of Living and Working Conditions demonstrating how time diary data can be used to measure quality of life. The paper addresses three main topics: 1) methods for measuring work-life balance (or balance of paid work, unpaid work, necessary activities and free time); 2) procedures for measuring the overlap of work time and other activities; 3) measuring social capital and activities spent alone, with family, and with other people that a person knows.
