Abstract:

In this paper I use BHPS data from 2001 to investigate the structure of
intergenerational exchange and contact in Britain. Indicators of intergenerational
exchange are analysed with latent class models, and the resulting latent classes are
characterised through a set of multinomial logistic regression models. Where
appropriate, I shall also compare the contemporary pattern as gleaned from the BHPS
with data collected a generation ago (1970), i.e. those collected in Young and
Willmott's The Symmetrical Family Study.
