National household panel studies have been established in a number of European countries. They are a major social scientific resource for understanding social and economic dynamics. This paper provides details on: 1) the nature and objectives of household panel studies; 2) the advantages of panel data; 3) the various external panel studies. A number of points concerning household panel studies are discussed by reference to the British Household Study - sample design; questionnaire design; and data collection and dissemination issues.
