CHILMOD: simulating tax and benefit policies for Chile
Compared to other OECD members, the tax-benefit system in Chile changes very little a very unequal income distribution, while this country does not have a tax-benefit microsimulation model to study in more detail distributional issues. Working alongside the Centre for Social Conflict and Cohesion Studies (COES, Universidad de Chile), Centre for Economics and Social Policy (CEAS, Universidad Mayor), Millennium Nucleus of Social Development (DESOC, Univerdad de Chile) and the Faculty of Economics at Universidad de Chile, members of the CeMPA team at ISER are working on building a tax-benefit microsimulation model, based on the EUROMOD platform, for Chile.
CHILMOD will be a tax-benefit microsimulation for Chile powered by and following EUROMOD rules. It is expected to be available for public in the first semester of 2021, starting with the 2017 tax-benefit system. In producing this new microsimulation model, the project sheds fresh light on the system-wide impacts of social protection and the tax system in this country, providing and analytical tool for policy makers and researchers alike to understand the current tax-benefit system and to be able to simulate the impacts of policy changes – real and potential.
