Inequalities in work and welfare: new research for policy evidence

Our ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change presents a two-session presentation of new research to the policy making community in Westminster on 3rd July. The event takes place at Broadway House, Tothill Street, Westminster from 10.30am to 4pm.

The morning session will feature the following short presentations of new research followed by an open discussion with the researchers.

10.45 am Professor Sonia Bhalotra, University of Warwick – minimum wages and wage inequality in the US

11.15 am break

11.30 am Professor Susan Harkness, University of Bristol – comparison of single mothers income across richest nations

12noon Dr Ben Etheridge, University of Essex  – observed transitions and occupational change

12.30 pm lunch

After lunch we will present new findings on gender inequalites at work followed by a panel discussion on the policy implications.

1.30 pm welcome

1.35 pm. Dr Silvia Avram. This new research by Dr Silvia Avram and Dr Daria Popova from the University of Essex looks at the inequalities in job progression and factors affecting the continuing gender paygap, in particular looking at how commuting costs restrict the available job opportunities for women (and especially mothers) and potentially result in lower wages.

2.15 pm Professor Almudena Sevilla, London School of Economics and Chair of the Royal Economic Society UK Women in Economics Network, will present a new study on gender inequalities in academic pay.

3.05 pm The panel discussion participants include Dr Sara Reis from the Women’s Budgetary Group and Nikki Pound, TUC.
