Understanding Society: how does the study as data infrastructure generate benefits for science, policy, and society?

[…] longitudinal study, Understanding Society also pursue an extensive programme of experimentation, methodological research and innovation to be at the forefront of science, survey delivery, user experience and impact. Central to our framework for the Study therefore are a Longitudinal Core of consistently collected data on key concepts over time; and New Enhancements, based on […]

Proteomics in Understanding Society: pre-analytic condition impacts on measurement

[…] associated with 127 of the 184 proteins we measured including nearly half of the “low detectability” proteins. Pre-analytic factors made little difference to these associations. Our findings suggest that the method we used to collect blood samples in Understanding Society does affect measurement, but it does not impact whether we observe social variation in proteomics.

Impact of subjective and objective neighbourhood characteristics and individual socioeconomic position on allostatic load: a cross sectional analysis of an all-age UK household panel study

[…] AL among those living in more disadvantaged areas, with objective measure associations stronger than subjective. Neighbourhood inequalities in AL were lower among respondents with higher individual SEP. These results suggest that individual-level SEP mitigates against the impact of negative, particularly objective, neighbourhood characteristics. Policies to reduce health inequalities should consider both individual and neighbourhood circumstances.

Impact of mode design on measurement errors and estimates of individual change

[…] panel surveys, although the lasting effects on data quality are unknown. To better understand the effects of mixed mode designs on panel data we will examine its impact on random and systematic error and on estimates of change. The SF12, a health scale, in the Understanding Society Innovation Panel is used for the analysis. […]

To better understand the effects of MM on panel data I will examine its impact on random and systematic error and on estimates of change. Impact of the Universal Infant Free School Meal policy

To inform the public debate on free school meals, this project offers the first evaluation of the UIFSM policy. We use administrative data to provide evidence on the impact of UIFSM implemented in England on take-up of meals, registration for FSM, bodyweight, school attendance, educational performance and food expenditure.

Going universal. The impact of free school lunches on child body weight outcomes

We study the impact on young children’s bodyweight of switching from means-tested to universal provision of nutritious free school meals in England, exploiting identifying variation in the timing of weight measurements. We show that exposure to high quality universal free lunches increases healthy weight prevalence and reduces obesity prevalence and BMI by the end […]
