Facilities and Resources: MPhil/PhD study

Facilities, resources and opportunities at ISER are second to none. As well as the challenging and supportive academic environment provided by our team of supervisors, our postgraduate students are provided with an outstanding working environment, facilities, resources and technical support.

Facilities

As a PhD student you will have your own desk in a shared office. You will also have your own networked computer and ready access to printing and copying facilities.

You will have access to specialist resources such as the well-resourced Hilary Doughty Research Library, with holdings of published and unpublished material on longitudinal and panel data methodology, and its application to economic and policy issues. Research students also have access to a variety of longitudinal and panel data sets including Understanding Society and the British Household Panel SurveyThe UK Data Archive is also based at Essex, providing an extremely rich support for original and innovative survey research.

You will attend research presentations by distinguished visiting speakers, as well as by staff and your fellow postgraduate students. ISER has several seminar series:

  • Seminars – ISER runs two seminar series, both of which are open to the wider University of Essex community and visitors. The Internal Seminar Series provide an opportunity for all ISER’s researchers, visitors and postgraduate students to share their ongoing research. The External Seminar Series hosts a range of speakers who are undertaking research in the same or similar areas as the ISER team.
  • Thursday afternoon research student seminar series

Our students are also encouraged to take part in the University’s postgraduate Proficio courses.
