Curriculum vitae

Professor of Survey Methodology and Co-Investigator/Associate Director of Innovations for Understanding Society: the UK Household Longitudinal Study

My research is on innovations in data collection methods. I focus on improving the scope and/or quality of survey data, by collecting additional information on respondents using tools other than survey questions. For example, linking in existing data about respondents (with their consent), asking them to use wearable or stationary sensors, or to use mobile applications for additional data collection tasks. The aim of my research is to inform best practice about how to implement such additional data collection tasks in a way that maximises participation, minimises the selectiveness of participants, and produces quality data that are fit for purpose. To achieve these aims I investigate barriers to participating in different types of additional data collection tasks, how respondents decide whether to participate, and experimentally test different aspects of fieldwork protocols.

Research Interests

  • New ways of using mobile devices for survey data collection
  • Respondent consent to data linkage
  • Mixed mode data collection, effects of mode on participation and measurement error
  • Questionnaire design to measure change in longitudinal surveys (dependent interviewing)
  • Methodology of longitudinal survey data collection
