Summary:
The pandemic was a global event. However, its impact was not identical within or across different countries owing to varying social, economic, and political structures, as well as the policies implemented by the countries to tackle the pandemic. Drawing on data from nationally representative surveys, this chapter examines how the pandemic was experienced differently in terms of health and wellbeing in four European countries: France, Germany, Italy, and the UK, and within these countries by individuals with different personal characteristics and circumstances. To provide a comprehensive picture, different measures of health and wellbeing were examined: self-reported health, mental health (including anxiety and depression), cognitive wellbeing (such as life satisfaction and happiness), and loneliness.
