The ESRC Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC), the Essex Centre for Migration Studies, UEA Migration Network and Sussex Centre for Migration Research invite PhD research students to submit their abstracts for presentation at the 4th annual Cross-Institutional PhD Colloquium on Ethnicity and Migration.
The conference will be in hybrid (online and in-person) format, and students will be eligible for a £150 bursary to offset the cost of attendance.
The colloquium solicits original doctoral research on a range of substantive or methodological issues relating to migration, ethnic relations and their consequences for both immigrants and their descendants, and for the sending and receiving societies. We welcome research projects from various disciplines including sociology, political science, economics and affiliated social sciences.
The colloquium is part of a two-day event including academic workshops by international scholars on new methods in migration studies and gender and family in migration research. We are also delighted to host Professor Ayhan Kaya as our distinguished keynote lecture. Our confirmed agenda is below.
Logistical Details
The colloquium will be hosted by MiSoC at the University of Essex in the UK. Participation is free and a conference dinner and two lunches are offered for accepted presenters. Colloquium bursaries of up to £150 to contribute towards the costs of travel are available for 8 presenters on a competitive basis.
Abstract Submission
Please submit a 500-word abstract that states your research question, methods, and results to Joonghyun Kwak by 4 April 2022.
Your submission should also include:
(1) names of authors;
(2) affiliations of authors;
(3) email addresses of authors; and
(4) the name of the presenting author.
The slots for presentation are limited and will be allocated on a competitive basis. Please mention in your application email if you wish to be considered for a travel bursary. We will notify you of acceptance by 15 April 2022.

Professor Ayhan Kaya, Istanbul Bilgi University
Ayhan Kaya is Professor of Politics and Jean Monnet Chair of European Politics of Interculturalism in the Department of International Relations at Istanbul Bilgi University, Turkey. His research interests focus on European identities, Euro-Turks in Germany, France, Belgium and the Netherlands, Circassian diaspora in Turkey, the construction and articulation of modern transnational identities, refugee studies in Turkey, conventional and nonconventional forms of political participation in Turkey, and the rise of populist movements in the EU. His recent book Populism and Heritage in Europe. Lost in Diversity and Unity was published by Routledge in 2019.
