ISER is one of the world’s leading quantitative social science research institutes, committed to using quality microdata
and cutting-edge quantitative methods to inform research that addresses key contemporary issues. Our continued
success in securing research funding means that we are seeking to appoint three new positions at the Professorial level. ISER is a research department of the University of Essex within the Faculty
of Social Sciences, and researchers at ISER are not expected to undertake undergraduate teaching.
The three posts are:-
Professor and Director of ISER
The ISER Directorship provides an exciting opportunity for an
outstanding individual with the vision and skills to shape ISER’s
future development and direction. The successful candidate will
provide strategic leadership, and ensure the long-term sustainability
of ISER as a world-leading research institute.
The new Director will have an established research profile and the ambition and
ability to manage a major research organisation that is engaged in both
data resource production and substantive analysis.
The candidate should be innovative and prepared to lead the
development of new research agendas. The Director also plays a key role in
promoting ISER’s research to external stakeholders to maximise the impact
of ISER’s research. Candidates may be from any disciplinary background
relevant to ISER’s research portfolio.

Professor and Director of EUROMOD
This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding individual to provide leadership and shape the future of
research on the effects of public policies and income distribution in
cross-national perspective, making use of EUROMOD, the multi-country
tax-benefit microsimulation model.
EUROMOD has a well-established international reputation, with many
opportunities to make an impact on public policy. It is used by policy
directorates of the European Commission, other international organisations
and national governments for policy design and impact analysis and informs
scientific research on the effects of public policies.
The new Director of EUROMOD will be an internationally recognised leader in their field. It is
expected that they will specialise in quantitative comparative social policy,
broadly defined, with a disciplinary background that could range from
economics to political science and with interests in income distribution
and measurement.

Professor and Co-Director of Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC)
We are seeking a professorial-level researcher and co-Director of the
ESRC-funded Research Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC) with the
ambition and ability to build on MiSoC’s record of the past two decades,
to help shape a new research agenda, and to lead MiSoC beyond 2019.
Applications are welcomed from any relevant disciplinary background,
but the balance of the current co-Directors means they are especially
welcome from quantitative researchers working in sociology, demography,
social policy, political science, or other related disciplines.
The successful
candidate will have an international reputation in their field of research,
with a distinguished publication record, and will be expected to make a
strong contribution to the next Research Excellence Framework exercise.
