Death of Professor Tony Coxon

It is with sadness that we inform you of the death of Professor Tony Coxon, who died on February 7, aged 73.

A Professor in Sociology and Health Studies, who worked at Essex from 1986 to 2002, Tony Coxon was the first director of the ESRC Research Centre on Micro-social Change (now ISER), which was created in 1989 as the home of the British Household Panel Survey. He also served briefly as Acting Director of the ESRC Qualidata archive.

Paying tribute to her predecessor, ISER Director Heather Laurie said:

“Tony was a man of great energy, enthusiasm, warmth and humour. He will be sadly missed.”

Professor Coxon was Honorary Professor at Cardiff University, and also Emeritus Professor of Sociological Research Methods, University of Wales (since 1988) and Professorial Research Fellow, University of Edinburgh (since 2002).

His funeral will be held at 12.30pm on Tuesday, 21 February, at the Church of St Andrew and St Teilo, Flora Street, Cathays, Cardiff CF24 4DX, and afterwards, from 2pm onwards, at Aberdare Hall, University of Cardiff, Corbett Road, Cathays, CF10 3UP.
