The wonders of social science for teenagers

Two hundred teenagers from Suffolk and Essex will be exploring the wonders of social science with ISER this November as we present Am I in Society? a day of activities as part of the ESRC Festival of Social Science.

Pupils from Holbrook Academy, East Bergholt High, Manningtree High and Harwich & Dovercourt School will be exploring the University of Essex campus and taking part in experiments and fun activities on November 6 & 7.

The day is designed to help young people understand the relevance of collecting and analysing information about society and how this can help government create better policies for the future.

Exploring themes really relevant to today’s young people – such as bullying, wellbeing, educational aspirations, healthy eating, risky behaviours, pocket money, recycling – they will be able to measure their own responses with those already collected from the thousands of young people in ISER’s study of 40,000 households, Understanding Society. They will do this through a variety of hands-on workshops, including crafts and physical activities, as well as through questionnaires and grip strength and height measurements used by Understanding Society. They will begin to understand how data is collected and the issues affecting responses. They will also hear about new findings about the topics interesting them, presented by ISER’s researchers.
