Professor David Lockwood has receieved a Lifetime Achievement Award to mark the 60th Anniversary of the British Sociological Association.
The award has been made in recognition of the extraordinary contribution Professor Lockwood has made to the history and development of sociology in Britain. The award is a prestigious and well-deserved honour for a major figure in British sociology.
Professor Lockwood authored what is one of the best-known studies ever undertaken by British sociologists, ‘The Affluent Worker’, a study examining the lives and aspirations of the new working class of post-war Britain. ‘The Affluent Worker’ was published in 1968, the year he moved to Essex as Professor of Sociology.
During his long career at the University, he has been Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Dean of Social Sciences, Head of the Sociology Department, is an Emeritus Professor and now Visiting Professor at ISER. In 1996, the British Journal of Sociology dedicated a special issue to him. In 1976 he was elected to a Fellowship of the British Academy and in 1990 to a Fellowship of the Academia Europea. In 1998, he was awarded a CBE in the honours list for his contributions to sociology.
Heather Laurie, Director of ISER, said:
‘David Lockwood is truly a giant of sociology in Britain whose contribution over a lifetime of work cannot be underestimated. I am extremely pleased to see his work has once again been recognised by the British Sociological Association in this way.’
