New PhDs and a funding boost for research students

ISER is expanding the research degrees it offers with two new PhDs.

ISER now offers a PhD in Health Research and a PhD in Survey Methodology, to complement its existing research degrees in Economics and Applied Social and Economic Research.

The new research degrees are announced at the same time as the University of Essex, where ISER is based, has been accredited as a Doctoral Training Centre, with 16 social science studentships available each year for the next five years.

Essex is one of a network of just 21 centres across the UK funded by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) to support postgraduate training. The ESRC accreditation is recognition of the high quality postgraduate training provided by Essex’s internationally renowned social science researchers, including the team at ISER, which has an international reputation for its research.

Essex’s 16 fully-funded studentships, a number of which are available to ISER students, are worth £18,000 a year each, cover 21 different subject areas, grouped around the University’s research strengths. The funding will cover the students’ fees and provide help towards their living costs. A new development is that the eligibility criteria for these studentships has changed so that they are now open to UK and EU students.

ISER’s Graduate Director, Cheti Nicoletti, said:

“Our world-class reputation for research, two exciting new PhDs on offer and the fantastic new funding opportunities make it a very good time to come and study at ISER,
