Friendship research aired in Oz

ISER’s Ray Pahl joined an eminent panel of experts to discuss friendship on Australian national radio channel ABC.

The discussion, hosted by presenter Annabelle Quince, also involved Allan Silver, Professor Emeritus in Sociology at Columbia University in New York and Barbara Caine, Professor of History at Monash University.

Under discussion was the role that friendship relationships have played in human society and how they have moved from historically being public relationships, often underpinning the political and social structures of society to private or personal – having no place in political or public life.

Ray Pahl has undertaken a wide range of research looking at friendships incliuding a recent ISER Working Paper, Family, Friends and Personal Communities; Changing Models-in-the Mind
