Hester (Hettie) Burn is a final-year Economics PhD student and Senior Research Officer (SRO) working on applied labour and health topics. Her research focuses on the drivers of inequalities in outcomes for children and young people. In her PhD, Hettie uses large datasets and quasi-experimental methods to explore how the environments that children face interact with their skills to determine school success, including research on teacher grading biases, early years pedagogies, and school suspensions and absences in England and Wales. Concurrently, in her SRO role, Hettie supports research on a range of health behaviours and outcomes for the NIHR-funded Applied Research Collaboration (East of England), with a particular focus on food inequalities among school-aged children.

Hettie holds master’s in International Education Policy from Harvard Graduate School of Education and a BA from the University of Oxford. Prior to her master’s and PhD, Hettie was a secondary school maths teacher for five years, initially training through the Teach First Leadership Development Programme. Hettie also delivers policy and economics training to UK government departments as an Associate Tutor with EML Learning.
