Pre-school, school and beyond: Improving social mobility through education is a one-day workshop organised by John Ermisch and Emilia Del Bono from the Institute for Social and Economic Research, University of Essex.

The purpose of the event is to promote an exchange of views between academics, policy makers, pressure groups and commentators interested in or working in this area.

The workshop includes a series of presentations and discussions about the effects of preschool and school education on children’s achievements and intergenerational mobility.

Speakers and discussants include John Ermisch (University of Essex), John Friedman (Harvard Kennedy School), Arnaud Lefranc (Université Cergy-Pontoise), Eric Maurin (Paris School of Economics), and Kjell Salvanes (Norvegian School of Economics and Business Administration). The discussion will be led by Steve Machin (University College London) and Anna Vignoles (Institute of Education) and chaired by Jonathan Portes (National Institute of Economic and Social Research).
