Modelling Criminal Conviction Careers – patterns and participation in crimeISER External Seminars

This talk discusses recent advances in the statistical modelling of
criminal career development through time. Unlike recent US work, which
has focused on the quantitaty of offending, the focus of this talk is on
the nature of offending and how offending develops over the life course.
Using the Offenders Index cohort data, a latent class approach is used
to develop patterns of offending, identifying classes of offences which
are likely to co-occur at a point in time. Recent work has concentrated
on the 16-20 year old age group. We identify shifts over time which are
both processural and behavioural. Future directions will be outlined.
