The ESRC Centre on Micro-Social Change (MiSoC) is hosting a workshop on parental beliefs and parental investments in children. This will focus on new research investigating the importance of individual expectations (i.e. beliefs) in determining choices, with a focus on the expectations that parents have regarding the returns to their investment in children. It will also include research that analyses other behavioural influences on the time and money investments that parents make. The papers in this workshop contribute to growing interest in economics and the other social sciences in the early life determinants of differences in achievement between children from families of high vs low socioeconomic status. Some of the papers at this conference use purposively gathered experimental data, while others use under-explored secondary data. The keynote speakers are Orazio Attanasio (UCL, UK) and Flavio Cunha (Rice University, USA). The conference is jointly organized by Sonia Bhalotra, Adeline Delavande, Emilia Del Bono and Birgitta Rabe.
