How did the abortion ban enacted in 1966 in Romania shape the life-course transitions of the significantly larger cohort born as a consequence? To answer this question, we build on different theoretical strands, and we conceptualize how gender and parental socio-economic status intersect with relative cohort size changes in affecting the next generation’s major adulthood life course transitions. Empirically, we exploit the discontinuity of the ban and use two complementary data sources, the Romanian Census and the Generations and Gender Survey. We find that being born and raised in a larger cohort has stronger effect for women’s transition to adulthood through postponing the timing of leaving home, union formation and childbearing. As these gendered effects are mainly driven by women with low parental socio-economic status, we showcase the relevance of an intersectional approach in studying intergenerational effects on life course trajectories.
