Equilibrium matching in school, work and marriage (with Robert McCann, Xianwen Shi, Ronald Wolthoff)ISER External Seminars

The paper studies how social and cognitive skills interact at school, work and marriage. We model optimal task assignments given exogenous team members, and then who matches with whom in all sectors. This multifactor multisector model delivers a theory of hierarchies where leadership or managerial skill is not isomorphic to superior cognitive skill. Managers and teachers with more social skills manage larger teams and classes respectively. Spouses match by both social and cognitive skills, managers and workers match by cognitive skills, and students with different social and initial cognitive abilities may attend the same school.
