Child Poverty and Social Mobility: Lessons for Research and PolicyMISOC

This one-day seminar brings together academics from across disciplines to present and discuss their latest research working on child poverty and social mobility in the UK, and to discuss the implications for policy. Topics that this seminar will examine include changes in poverty, in particular the growth in in-work poverty, among families with children; divergences in parental time use and the implications for children’s opportunities; and the role parental wealth in social mobility.

The seminar, which is the fifth in a series of nine events being held across the UK, will be of relevance to academics, policy makers and charities concerned with childhood poverty and social mobility. This event is supported by the ESRC Centre on Micro-Social Change at the University of Essex.

About the series:

This series of conference and academic seminars funded by the ESRC, entitled, ‘Child Poverty and Social Mobility: Lessons for Research and Policy’, is co-ordinated by the Centre for the Analysis of Social Policy, University of Bath and the Social Mobility and Child Poverty Commission. The events are also supported by the Institute for Policy Research at the University of Bath.

The conferences bring together academics and policy makers to help improve our understanding of both the causes and consequences of declining social mobility and child poverty in Britain; to assess the influence that policy has had on these trends; and to consider how best policy makers might now respond to declining mobility.
