Facilities and Resources: MPhil/PhD study
Facilities, resources and opportunities at ISER are second to none. As well as the challenging and supportive academic environment provided by our team of supervisors, our postgraduate students are provided with an outstanding working environment, facilities, resources and technical support.
As a PhD student you will have your own desk in a shared office. You will also have your own networked PC and ready access to laser printers, photocopiers, and telephone.
You will have access to specialist resources such as the well-resourced Hilary Doughty Research Library, with holdings of published and unpublished material on longitudinal and panel data methodology, and its application to economic and policy issues. Research students also have access to a variety of longitudinal and panel data sets including Understanding Society and the British Household Panel Survey. The UK Data Archive is also based at Essex, providing an extremely rich support for original and innovative survey research.
You will attend research presentations by distinguished visiting speakers, as well as by staff and your fellow postgraduate students. ISER has several seminar series:
- Monday Afternoon Seminars – for external speakers
- Joint Empirical Social Science (JESS) Seminars, held on Wednesdays
- Thursday afternoon research student seminar series
Our students also take part in the University’s postgraduate research training skills programme provided by the Learning and Teaching Unit.
