Abstract:

This project is motivated by developments for older people in overlapping dimensions of their lives - work, income, family - each affected by government policy. Employment rates have been falling, especially for men. Poverty in old age remains a problem and there are growing differences between those with second-tier pensions and those without. Doubts about the capacity of the state retirement pension to provide adequate living standards in old age continue. Against this background, we focus on two themes. 1. The diversity of patterns of labour market transitions and withdrawal around about the time of retirement, with analysis of how these are related to incomes and living standards over the same period. 2. The diversity of patterns of paid work throughout the working lives of retired people, with investigation of the relationships between post-retirement incomes and these patterns. For both themes, we aim to analyse associations between work and income taking into account the role of other important influences on income, including differences by gender, ill-health, and marital status, and to utilise data from the British Household Panel Survey.
