Understanding Society data release – Wave 10 now available

The latest release of the main survey dataset from Understanding Society, the UK Household Longitudinal Study, run by a team of scientific experts at ISER, is now available to download from the UK Data Service. Wave 10 covers Understanding Society fieldwork that took place between 2009 and 2019. The dataset also includes the harmonised BHPS data from 1991, allowing researchers to analsye 29 years of rich household panel data.

Along with the core content that is carried in each wave of the survey, Wave 10 includes a set of modules that are carried every two or three waves. These include:

  • Material deprivation
  • Child deprivation
  • Pensioner deprivation
  • Commuting behaviour
  • Work conditions
  • Charitable giving
  • Voluntary work
  • Transport behaviour
  • Sleep quality

In the self-completion section of the survey respondents were asked about:

  • The party they voted for at the last General Election
  • Physcial and mental health
  • Life satisfaction
  • Loneliness
  • Gender attitudes
  • Environmental behaviour and attitudes
  • Youth survey

(*The youth survey for Wave 10 includes rotating content on future intentions, risky behaviour, religious identity, friendship groups and self-esteem. New content was added in Wave 10 on cognitive measures).

Researchers can access Wave 10 End User Licence data via the UK Data Service. The Special Licence version of the Wave 10 dataset is also available.

We’ll be celebrating our Wave 10 anniversary throughout 2021 with a series of events and mini-conferences on key themes in the Study. Our celebratory year starts in January with a week of topical policy debates featuring research and policy commentators, plus the launch of our 2021 Insights publication. There will be events every day in the week 25-29 January. All our events are free to attend, but advance booking will be required. Booking will open at the beginning of December.
