If you would like to be part of one of the world’s most highly-rated interdisciplinary research institutes then you should consider postgraduate study at ISER at the University of Essex.
ISER has a national and international reputation for longitudinal data analysis and research on social and economic policy issues, and also for survey methods. ISER contains the ESRC United Kingdom Longitudinal Studies Centre and is home to the world’s largest new longitudinal study, Understanding Society. It also houses the ESRC’s Research Centre on Micro-Social Change which undertakes a programme of outstanding quantitative and qualitative research. The University of Essex is the top-rated university in the UK for social science research.
Our postgraduate students on both Masters and PhD programmes are taught, supervised by, and associate with, some of the leading researchers in their fields.
They are actively involved in ISER’s research group activities.
With nearly 40 research staff and a constant flow of visiting scholars from abroad, including economists, econometricians, sociologists, social psychologists, survey methodologists, statisticians, and political scientists, this is an academic environment that is second to none.
The quality of ISER research is reflected in publications in top journals,
and in extensive research contracts and consultancy for organisations such as the European Commission, and various government departments and charitable foundations such as the Joseph Rowntree Foundation, Leverhulme Trust, and Nuffield Foundation.
We work closely with other departments within the University, notably Department of Economics and Department of Sociology, and are one of the most significant
contributors to the most recent HEFCE Research Assessment Exercise which ranked Sociology research the best in the UK and Economics 3rd in the UK.
ISER staff also contribute courses to the University of Essex Summer School in Social Science Data Analysis and Collection.ISER’s postgraduate students are among some of the best resourced in the country with first-class office and IT facilities,
a well-resourced specialist library and easy access to a variety of longitudinal and panel data sets.
ISER welcomes many distinguished visiting speakers, and organises a regular programme of seminars and workshops for staff and students, with students expected to participate actively both as attendees and presenters.
